The hosting of sports events - whether large international events, or smaller niche interest events - has huge and long-lasting impacts on the local environment, economy and industry. "Sports: Career Opportunities for an MBA" would look to provide student managers with an insight into the strategic management of sports events of different scales and nature.

Mr. Anshul Bagai, an alumnus of 1997 batch, one of the first true Sports Marketers of IMT will share some insights gained from his commendable experience in the exciting field of Sports Event Management

Mr. Bagai did his schooling from Daly School, Indore. Thereon, he went on to complete B.Sc (Statistics) from Bhopal. He synchronously kept the ball rolling in terms of his accolades in sports. He proved his calibre being a national level player in squash and tennis. He made significant representation in cricket and golf as well.

In 1995, he joined IMT to pursue a diploma in Business Management. Here also his zeal for sports persisted and was the appointed as Sports Committee Secretary of IMT during this period. He contributed significantly in building up the sports infrastructure that IMT holds today.

After completing his PGDBM from IMT, he took forward his passion for sports at a professional level. He was associated with Tiger Sports Marketing Private Limited (TSM) for a year. Tiger Sports Marketing Pvt. Ltd is India’s No.1 golf event management company. The company holds the exclusive marketing and management rights of the Amateur Golf Tour and the Junior / Sub Junior Golf Tour, besides managing more than 50 corporate events in a year. TSM enjoys a major market share in all professionally managed golf tournaments. During his tenure with this company, he took the responsibility of managing and organising all golf events.Mr. Bagai was also involved in the setting up of the Asian Golf Association.

After a year’s experience with TSM, Mr. Bagai gained tremendous exposure in Sports Marketing and Event Management by working with All India Tennis Association for another year as a consultant.

Currently holding the position of a CEO with Soma Facilities dealing in facility management, Mr. Bagai continues to be actively involved in sports events management even now.

WHY IMT?

Ever heard of a 72 hours non stop Sporting feast? Check this out

Strength comes from an indomitable will. Skill and confidence is an unconquered army. And the sporting arena at IMT-Ghaziabad is probably the best place where strength, will, skill and confidence converge to dazzle us with the sporting extravaganza called “Chakravyuh”. Exemplary displays of strategies, team-work and healthy entertainment have traditionally been the trademark of “Chakravyuh” year after year.
Having been organised since more than a decade now, “Chakravyuh” is now widely acknowledged as one of the biggest sporting events amongst all the B-Schools of the country. The 72 hours of “Chakravyuh” each year abound with a palpable adrenaline rush and healthy competition. The event encompasses a wide gamut of sports and games ranging from athletics, outdoor sports like badminton, basketball, cricket, football, lawn tennis, throwball, volleyball and indoor sports like table tennis to even virtual games. Events like DJ nights and sports quizzes sizzle up the event even more.In a nut-shell, “Chakravyuh” encompasses the very spirit of IMT-Ghaziabad. It stands for pride, honour, patience, perseverance, stamina, will-power and above all a sportsmanship spirit, qualities that are so very essential for coming out a winner in the battle called “Life”.
For the benefit of those excited, the event takes off February 5th, 2010.

"I will not rest until I have you holding a Coke, wearing your own shoe, playing a Sega game featuring you, while singing your own song in a new commercial, starring you, broadcast during the Superbowl, in a game that you are winning, and I will not sleep until that happens."

Sounds familiar? Well don't get us wrong. We obviously wouldn't promise you Hollywood super-agent Jerry Maguire. But we have managed the non-fictional Indian equivalent.
Latika Khaneja-Founder and Director at Collage Sports Management, and a fellow MBA herself, will be co chairing the panel discussion at the conclave.

"Sports: Career Opportunities for an MBA" will look to cover a wide range functions in the sports industry that a manager can look to work in. Sports Management being just one of them. So what makes Ms. Khaneja one of the best(if not the best) persons to speak on that platform? We present our case-
Ms. Khaneja, who was born and spent the first nine years of her life in different small towns in Canada completed her graduation from SRCC,Delhi. After college, she worked hard to get into an IIM. She did. But after getting her management degree, she soon got married in 1987. The next three years were spent in Mosul, Iraq, where her husband had a family business.Khaneja started a garment export business in 1991 after the couple came back to India. By the time she was through in 1999, her business was worth Rs 15 crore. "But I was tired of doing the same thing", she says.

Those were the heady dotcom days. And Khaneja worked hard to do a book guide show which combined dotcom with television. But it didn't really work. Fast forward to now, the sports agent thing has more than worked out. Her job includes organising the million buck endorsement deals. Of course, she makes a decent packet herself.

For cricketers such as Virender Sehwag, Amit Mishra, Ishant Sharma, Ashish Nehra, Dinesh Mongia, Gautam Gambhir & Sanjay Banga, she's the go to lady for anything off field. Not to mention India's Olympic shooting star Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore.

The job is tougher than it seems though. Ringing up CEOs, convincing them to invest in a particular sportsperson, making well-researched presentations, negotiating deals, examining the legal side of contracts the range of work is staggering. But the graduate from IIM, Calcutta, has done more than admirably so far.

Impressed? Well, we are too.

Sports Marketing Conclave - the 1st ever in any b-school in India

Remember Beijing 2008? Good. But then again it is tough to not remember a spectacle of epic proportions. The sensory delight that was the Olympic Games was a success that India will look to replicate in 2010 as it gets set to host the nineteenth edition of the Commonwealth Games. A large part of that preparation includes the challenge of marketing the event right so as to ensure that the whole world sits up and takes notice. It is with that in mind that IMT Ghaziabad presents, as a part of the Sports Marketing Conclave, the marketing event- "Branding the Games- A Marketing Challenge".

To make the proposition even more interesting, the communication team from the Games has agreed to come down and find out what your take is on the marketing of an event that is increasingly being looked at as a make or break event for India on the world stage.
The detailed instructions for participating in the event can be found on http://www.dare2compete.com/index.php

Accountability, meeting deadlines, promotion, managing franchises, sponsorships and sustaining revenues may not sound half as exciting as power plays, pit stops and winged offenses, but they are undoubtedly as integral a part of sports. To get a clearer perspective on what a qualified manager can expect to accomplish in the Sports industry, a panel discussion with some of the established names in the field has been scheduled. "Sports: Career Opportunities for an MBA" is an exclusive opportunity for managers-in-the-making to listen to valuable insights and even get their queries answered.

Wrapping up the day would be an activity with unmatched popularity in the B-School circuit- "The Business of Sport Quiz". The multiple round event is to start off with a quiz testing the knowledge of the business behind the sport, followed by a surprise round to determine the true marketing calibre of sportsmen-at-heart management students.

See you there!!
